Fellow writers and poets, please attend one of the informational meetings regarding WIWA next Thursday at 7pm at Skagit Valley College, Room 225, Oak Hall.

Tonight was the meeting in Coupeville.

Please attend and give your input for programs, classes and the direction of the Whidbey Island Writers Association.

Don’t forget, Wednesdays, Just Write at the Coupeville pier. Join literary agent Andrea Hurst and local writers for an afternoon of inspiration and education. Come prepared to write, only sharing your daily goals and how you did, prepared to learn, enjoying speakers on topics such as blogging, publishing, and publicity, and prepared to meet kindred spirits. 3-5:30 pm, Wednesdays.

Visit the Whidbey Island Writers Association for more information on local critique groups, classes, contests and more.

Save the date! Mussel Festival & Free Spring Art Studio Tour

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Put it on your calendar, enter it on your Blackberry, stick something on the fridge…you don’t want to miss next weekend’s events in Coupeville. MARCH 6 through 8, 2009!
The 22nd Penn Cove Mussel Festival will be held Friday through Sunday, March 6-8th. On Friday, it’s the Mussel Mingle ($20) at the Rec Hall, with artists from the Whidbey Working Artists, music by FunkMason, brats, mussels & beer! Saturday & Sunday have the full festival line-up. Click on the link for a full run-down, directions, hours and more. Events on the weekend include the famous mussel chowder tasting, eating competitions, live bands throughout the day, art walk, free kids activities & crafts, tours of the mussel farm (small fee) and a bunch of other stuff. Saturday night includes late night shopping & art walk and the Steve Trembley band until 9:00 p.m.

Also, after the Mussel Mingle, you can run up to Oak Harbor to the Elks Lodge and support the Coupeville High School Senior Class and dance the night away to Johnny Bulldog at 7:30pm. This is a kicking awesome fun party band including Larry Mason (of FunkMason–yes, he’ll play guitar earlier, then rush and be the drummer) John Tristao (lead singer of Creedence Clearwater Revisited), keyboard player Marcus Whiting (who will also play on Saturday at the Mussel Festival), Kevin on electric guitar and that other dude on bass. :) Tickets are $20 at Brenda’s Front Porch in Oak Harbor or Heidi’s Coffee or Branch Business Services in Coupeville, or $25 at the door. If this group doesn’t make your spouse get up and dance…they need to be checked for a pulse.

Also that weekend–Saturday & Sunday from 10-5 pm is the Whidbey Working Artists Spring Art Studio Tour. This free tour showcases 38 artists at 27 different studios most around Coupeville or North Whidbey and a few in the Greenbank area. Jewelry, sculpture, paintings, pottery, furniture, photography, textiles…yes, there is something in the water on Whidbey that nurtures great art.

Speaking of which…did you know it was pouring rain and windy as all heck at Seatac airport today and lovely, sunny and wind-free in Coupeville? I love the rain shadow.

I’ll do the events for this coming weekend tomorrow. Do not fret! I know it’s the Whidbey Island Writers Association Conference, the 27th & 28th, but it may be too late to sign up. Sorry I didn’t get this posted sooner. They do have classes Saturday night, open to non-conference attendees, but again, not sure if it’s too late. Take a click over or give a ring to 360-331-6714 to find out. I have attended in prior years and was very impressed. The group hosts intimate classes in breathtaking South Whidbey homes–an unbeatable chance to mingle and learn from authors, publishers and editors.
