Summer Update for Krueger

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Yep, haven’t posted in a long time. We’ve had steady sales–a lot of second-home buyers and some military folks too stationed at nearby NAS Whidbey Island.

Summer has been great on Whidbey. It’s a lovely 65 degrees right now, sunny and all the mountains are out. Missed the farmer’s market–busy working on revisions–but enjoyed a nice walk today. Did you know the walking trails around town go all the way out along Parker Road? You can really go for a long walk in every direction.

Tonight’s the Pleine Air Gala Event. It’s been fun seeing all the painters around Ebey’s Landing with their easels.

Also, we had a great dinner last night at the new Front Street Grill on, you guessed it, Front Street. Right on the water, the beautiful craftsmanship will wow you (owner Dan Miranda is also a custom home builder). The food was awesome too. I had a filet mignon and it was no less than spectacular. Would it be so wrong to eat that every day? Women need iron, right? :)

Whidbey Open Studio Preview

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

This weekend visit the Crockett Barn near the Keystone/Port Townsend ferry and preview one piece from each of the 93 artists on next weekend’s Whidbey Open Studio Tour.

The Crockett Barn is a beautiful venue, overlooking the waters near Fort Casey.

If you haven’t enjoyed one of the studio tours before, please make a point to go. It’s amazing how many artists are around Whidbey. This tour concentrates on visual artists working in fiber, pottery, painting, woodworking, jewelry making, sculpture, photography, glassblowing and more.

The preview is Saturday and Sunday, the 19th-20th. The Tour is scheduled for next weekend. There is also a preview being held at Bayview Corner.

Wine tasting, art walks, open air painting and get ready for the Tour de Whidbey!

Chardonnay & Cabernet Tasting at Coupeville Bayleaf!
This Friday, September 4th, 5- 7 pm; Preregister $10 includes tasting and treats

Coupeville Art Walk this Saturday, the 5th, from 5-8pm. Enjoy the galleries along the historic waterfront.

Don’t forget First Fridays at the Greenbank Farm, wine tasting, art openings, music and treats. This Friday is the Tess Gallagher poetry reading at the Rob Schouten gallery. And newly added is First Fridays in Oak Harbor at the Garry Oak Gallery on Pioneer Way. Several nearby businesses will stay open until 8pm. That’s the only gallery in Oak Harbor though.

If you’re heading south, stop by the Bayview Cash Store for the beginning of the Woodpalooza 6th Annual Woodworking Show, Sept. 5-13th, from 11-6pm daily. See the great article and photo from the South Whidbey News Times here.

Next Tuesday, the 8th, begins the Plein Air Painters U.S. Open where painters from around the world gather around the Coupeville area for the entire week and create paintings in the “open” air. The event finishes with a celebration gala & silent auction on the 12th at the Crockett Barn.

Finally, why not dust off your bicycle and put a few miles in around town or on the trails in preparation for the September 26th Tour de Whidbey. Six different mileage options to choose from ranging from a 10-mile family fun ride starting in Coupeville all the way to a challenging 100 mile century ride. Check out the website, with cool elevation stats for the rides.

That’s a fun weekend to mark anyway, because it’s also the Annual Kite Festival at Fort Casey and the Whidbey Island Open Studio Tour. It might be fun another Krueger Commons social, but I’m still working on dates.

Don’t forget the Coupeville Farmer’s Market, Saturdays, 10-2. Why not stop by the Masonic Lodge on Main Street for their Pancake Breakfast beforehand, all-you-can-eat from 8-11. The Friends of the Library will be selling books at the market too. Construction of the new library is coming along.

Mussel Festival Weekend Update

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Well, the Johnny Bulldog concert last night, benefiting the Coupeville High School Senior Class, seemed to be a resounding success! As usual, the band rocked the house. Lots of neat silent auction items were sold too.

Right now, it’s sunny and clear, but the wind–she is a blowing this morning. Dress warmly for the wind chill and don’t forget your sunglasses.

UPDATE: Weather isn’t so hot today–a spring storm of wind. So, inside activities are the name of the game for Saturday. Sunday should hopefully be better. Indoor options include the special exhibit at the Island County Historical Museum, browsing and finding treasures in the wonderful shops along Front Street, the Central Whidbey Co-Op Preschool is having a garage sale Saturday at the Methodist Church on Main Street, enjoying a bite to eat at one of the restaurants, viewing the art exhibit in the Rec Hall, or even enjoying some of the art studios on the Whidbey Working Artists Tour.

We stopped by the studios of painter Linda Shaefer’s and Karen Schroeder–oils and pastels. Boy, what a treat. Both of these artists had amazing abilities with light and color. From gorgeous notecards, unframed matted paintings or prints to beautifully framed pieces of artwork, there was a treasure to take home in everybody’s price range.

Enjoy! Oh, and Open House hours are today 3-6pm and Sunday, 1-5.

Upcoming Events, February 27-29th

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

What a beautiful day in Coupeville! The sun is shining and the bit of snow we got last night is gone. The prairie looked lovely in a white blanket as I drove the kids to school. Here are a few things you might think about doing this weekend:

Parents, Friday is an early release day again. Free program at the Multi-Purpose Room at the elementary school. Author/illustrator Caroll Simpson will read from her new book, First Beaver. Learn about the Native culture and do a traditional craft after the program. You don’t have to have kids at the elementary to attend.

This weekend is the opening for the CHS production of The Fantasticks musical at the Performing Arts Center. Opening night is this Friday at 7pm. Shows are also on Saturdays at 7pm and Sundays at 2. The musical runs for 2 weeks, through March 8th. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, children and students with an ASB sticker. Purchase early, and get a $1 off. Tickets available at the CHS office or at the door. Call 678-4409.

The deadline for the upcoming Art Celebrating Cancer exhibit at the Coupeville Arts Center is fast approaching on March 2. Artists who have been affected by cancer are invited to submit an application to be included. Anything from paintings or quilts to prose or poetry. Click here for an application. The show will be held Mussel Festival weekend, Saturday, March 7th, from 10-4 at the Coupeville Arts Center.

Speaking of the Coupeville Arts Center, through tomorrow is the Member’s Only Exhibition from 9-4 on Friday. More than 100 works in mixed media, fiber, photography & paintings.

Did you know you can get free tax help on Wednesdays from 1-4 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Coupeville? For those with low to moderate income, provided by IRS-trained AARP volunteers. Free tax help is also available in Oak Harbor and Langley.

I met our newest homeowners this week and what a great match for them. They’re so excited about their new second home and eventual retirement home at Krueger Commons and about living in Coupeville. The town will be thrilled to meet them and welcome them to our active community. We talked about the WSU Mastergardener program, Learning Partners mentoring at the local schools, the biking opportunities and more. Welcome!

Cool blog to explore & a link for Krueger Commons

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Check out this neat blog I found, Grace Lichtenstein, a former NY Times reporter and writer for Lance Armstrong’s LiveSTRONG organization, writes about vacation homes and also has a blog called Senior Adventures, where she talks about great deals, recreation opportunties and more. She did a piece on Krueger Commons you might want to check out.

Krueger Commons is a perfect match for an active senior or anyone looking for a vacation escape. Coupeville is a charming historic waterfront town, a ferry ride away from the hubub and traffic of the Seattle area. Artistic and recreation activities abound for all ages. Lots of folks thrive with the many volunteer and adult learning opportunities too, from Master Gardener programs, philanthropic service organizations like Lions, to Learning Partners at the local schools, mentoring while tutoring. Miles and miles of road biking, mountain biking, walking and hiking trails start from the parking lot of the community. Both sides of the island are a hike or bike away. Kayaking is magical down the hill at Penn Cove.
